BADRAMA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Nestled in the district of Sambalpur, in the Bamra Wildlife Division, Badrama Wildlife
Sanctuary is about 200km away from Rourkela, in the state of Odisha. It was established in the
year 1987. The sanctuary is situated close to Ushakothi and so it is also referred to as Ushakothi
Sanctuary.
Flora
Forest cover: dry deciduous forests
Trees: Acacia, Sandalwood, Sal, Neem, Casuarinas and Arjun
Fauna
Leopards, Sambhars, Panthers, Chital, Tigers (approximately 15), Gaur Sloth Bears, Elephants,
Flying squirrels, bison, etc.
Avian fauna
Racket tail drangos, peacocks, myna, vultures, eagles, woodpecker, etc.
Getting There
The closest railhead is at Sambalpur (38 km away). The nearest bus terminal is at Ushakothi,
which is situated on the NH6. By roadway, the sanctuary can be accessed from Sambalpur
through NH-6 via Keojhar/Karanjia. Bhubaneswar airport is located at a distance of about 300
km from Badrama Wildlife Sanctuary.
Tourist information
Forest Rest House at Badrama, around 3 km from the sanctuary can be availed for
accommodation. OTDC's Panthanivas at Sambalpur and forest bungalow close to the sanctuary
are other options for staying.
The visitors need to obtain entry permit from the Forest Range Officer, stationed at Badrama.
Photography is strictly forbidden inside the sanctuary. Since most part of the park remains dark
due to the dense forest cover, the visitors, in exchange for a small fee, can get guides and spot
lights for their safari rides from the Forest officer of the sanctuary.
Two watch towers installed near the saline tank are ideal place to watch the wildlife in their
natural environment.
