BHAGWAN MAHAVEER WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary is located at Mollem village at Sanguem Taluka in Goa. It is nestled along the slopes of Western Ghat ranges and was established in 1969.

Flora
Vegetation type: West Coast semi-evergreen forests, West Coast tropical evergreen forests, wet deciduous forests and patches of savannah grasslands.
Major trees: iron wood, kokum, dahu, dalchini, etc.
Important medicinal plants: Indian snakeroot, crêpe ginger, Coral bead vine, etc.

Fauna
Important species: gaur (Goa’s state animal).
Other species: panther, barking deer, tiger, sambar, toddy cat, Indian civet, giant squirrel, king cobras, slender lorris, etc.

Avian Fauna
Important species: Ruby-throated yellow bulbul (Goa’s state bird).
Paradise Flycatcher, Emerald Dove, White-bellied Woodpecker, Black-crested Bulbul, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, etc.

Getting There
Colem railway station, about 6 km away, is the nearest railway station. Dabolim airport is approx. 80 km away from Bhagwan Mahaveer Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary is situated on Panaji-Belgaum Road and regular bus and taxi services are available from Panaji and Margao to Mollem.

Tourist Information
Forest Department’s Forest Rest House at Mollem is available for accommodation against advance booking with the Dy. Conservator of Forests (North Goa), Dhavli-Ponda. One can also opt to stay in the dormitories and cottages at the Forest Resort Complex in Mollem with prior reservation with the manager of the complex.
The best time for bird watching is between 6.30 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. in the morning and between 4.00 p.m. and 5.00 p.m. It is always advisable to be escorted by an experienced guide while walking through the forest. Trekking for few days in the isolated areas of the sanctuary is the ideal way to spot the fascinating wildlife of the region. Watchtowers have been erected close to the waterholes to enable the visitors to view the wildlife from a closer distance.
Dudhsagar Waterfall and Nature Interpretation Centre are located within the wildlife sanctuary and are a must visit for the tourists.
