BORI-SATPURA TIGER RESERVE - Madhya Pradesh

Bori-Satpura Tiger Reserve is nestled among the Satpura Hills in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is spread over a huge area of about 1501.72 sq km. This tiger reserve comprises of Bori Sanctuary (486 sq km), Satpura National Park (about 524 sq km.) and Pachmarhi Sanctuary (417 sq km.)

History of the park
The reserve was first set up in 1891 as Satpura National Park. It was conferred a Tiger Reserve status in the year 1999 under Project Tiger.

Flora
Tropical moist deciduous forest, topical dry deciduous forest and sub-tropical forest are the prime vegetation cover of the reserve. Teak and Sal are important tree species here. Different bamboo species such as Strictus, Dendrocalamus and different fern species such as Haldu, Tendu, Jamun and Mahua can also be found here.

Fauna
As per the census report of 2002, almost 35 tigers are there in Bori-Satpura Tiger Reserve. Other mammals: Rhesus Monkey, Barasingha, Leopard, Elephant, Bison, Sloth Bear, Chausingha, Dhole, Wolf, Giant Squirrel, etc.
Important reptiles: Python, Common Indian Monitor, Chameleon, Cobra, Crocodile, Russels Viper and many more.

Avian fauna
Partridges, Paradise fly catchers, Falcons, Vultures, Bulbuls, Mynas, Pigeons, Woodpeckers, Kingfishers, Warblers, etc.

Getting there
The closest airports, bus terminals and railheads to the reserve are at Nagpur, Jabalpur and Bhopal. By road one can also reach the reserve from Pachmarhi (about 52 km away) via Piparia.

Tourist Tips
Inside the park lodging can be available at the Churna Tourism Bungalow. Forest Bungalows, located in the deep interior of the reserve at Dhain and Bori, also provide quality lodging. Outside the Bori- Satpura reserve, staying facilities can be availed at Pachmarhi.

Littering, carrying armed weapons and pets inside the reserve is strictly prohibited. Avoid making sounds and imitating the birds, as this can irritate the wildlife of the reserve. Jeep safari and nature trail are important tourist activities here.
