CHAIL WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Himachal Pradesh, about 63km away from Shimla. The sanctuary
was previously a hunting ground of the Maharaja of Patiala.

Flora
Forest type: Pine and oak forest mixed with grasslands.
Trees and shrubs: Deodar, Oak, Blue Pine, Cedar, Robinia and Rhododendron.
Fauna
Himalayan black bear, leopards, goral crested porcupine, sambar, common langur, wild boar, black-
naped hare, Indian muntjac, etc.
Avian Fauna
Important species: Chir Pheasant and khalij pheasant.
Other species: grey headed flycatcher, golden eagle, jungle fowl, owl, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport is in Chandigarh. The closest railway station is about 85km away at Kalka. Kandaghat
is the nearest narrow gauge railway station from where toy trains from Kalka to Shimla are available.
From Kandaghat one can easily get taxis and buses to reach Chail.
Chail Wildlife Sanctuary is well connected with regular bus services with Shimla, Chandigarh and other
towns and cities of Himachal Pradesh. NH-22 connects Shimla to Chandigarh.
Tourist Information
There are no staying options within the sanctuary. However, tourists can find quality accommodation
around the sanctuary. Alternatively, one can stay at Chail where different HPTDC cottages, Heritage
hotels and resorts, and lodges are available.
Trekking, angling on Gaura River and bird watching are popular pastimes of the visitors. Chail-Shimla via
Junga, Kandaghat-Chail, Chail-Rajgarh, Kali ka Tibba to Gaura River and Jhajjha, etc. are some of the
most popular trekking trails in the forest reserve.
Chir Pheasant Breeding Centres situated in Jhajjha and Blossom are worth visiting.
