DALMA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the East Singhbhum and Saraikella-Kharswan districts of Jharkhand.

About the sanctuary
It is nestled along the Dalma Hill ranges in the catchment region of River Subarnarekha. The sanctuary was inaugurated in the year 1975 by Sanjay Gandhi.

Flora
Arid mixed deciduous forest and arid peninsular sal forest are the prime vegetation cover of the region. The endemic tree species are jamun, dhaura, kendu, karam, terminalias, etc.

Wildlife
Elephants are the important animals of the area. The other wildlife species include Tigers, Sloth Bear, Elephants, Porcupines, Barking Deer, Gaurs, Chital, Wild Dogs, Giant Squirrels, Monkeys, Gharials and Muggers (marsh crocodiles).

Getting there
Bisra Munda Airport at Ranchi is the closest airdrome. The Chandil Railway Station is the nearby rail station and Bhagalpur Junction is the closest railhead. Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary is located on Tata-Ranchi National Highway and is about 10 km away from the Munger-Jamui state highway. Jharkhand State Road Transport buses and different private buses ply between Jamshedpur and the sanctuary.

Tourist information
Forest Department guesthouses and Tata Steel guesthouse offer quality accommodation to the incoming visitors. Pindrabera Forest Rest House can also be availed for accommodation with prior permit from the Range Forest Office, stationed at Mango, Jamshedpur.
The rugged topography of the sanctuary offers unique trekking opportunity for the tourists. The sanctuary has certain hideouts in certain locations to enable the tourists to watch the wildlife in their natural environment.
Pets, firearms, explosive items and drinking alcohols are not permitted inside the park. The tourists are advised to wear strong boots and loose clothes for walking easily across the hilly undulating terrain. The area is frequented by Naxalites, a political group; hence do not venture into unauthorized and unknown tracts. The temple of Lord Shiva inside the sanctuary is also a hot tourist spot.
