DIBRU-SAIKHOWA NATIONAL PARK – Assam
Nestled in the flood plains of Brahmaputra in Assam, Dibru-Saikhowa National Park is spread over
an area of 340 km 2 . It is located almost at an altitude of 118 m above sea level. The park is situated in
Tinsukia district of Assam and was declared a national park in 1999.
Fauna
The park is also quite popular for its dazzlingly coloured wild horses, known as the Feral Horses. At present, there are about seventy nine Feral Horses in the park. The other fauna of the park include Clouded Leopard, Royal Bengal Tiger, Sloth Bear, Malayan Giant Squirrel, Asiatic Water Buffalo, Asian Elephant, barking Deer, Gangetic Dolphin, etc.
Avian fauna
Birds such as Adjutant Storks, Herons, Indian Shag, Yellow Bittern, Bear's Poachard, White winged wood ducks, Bengal Florican, etc. are found here. Migratory birds such as Brahmini duck, Geyleg goose, Bar-headed goose, etc. can also be sighted during the winter season.
Flora
Dillenia Indica (Elephant apple), Arundo Donax (Giant reed), Ficus (fig trees), Dalbergia Sissoo (Bombay Blackwood), Bombax Ceiba (Silk Cotton Tree), etc. are some of the important floras here.
Getting there
The nearest railhead and bus terminal are at Tinsukia. From Tinsukia one can hire a taxi or an auto to reach the park. The closest airport is the Mohanbari airport located near Dibrugarh.
General information
Saikhowa ghat and Guijan Ghat are two entry points to Dibru-Saikhowa National Park. Accommodation facilities are available at the Guijan Forest I.B. located outside the park. More lodging options are available at Tinsukia town.
Tourists are advised to wear light cotton clothes in summer and woolen clothing during winter. Entry permit for entering the park is required from the park officials. Picnic is not permitted inside the park and the visitors are advised to carry their own food and water.
