EAGLENEST WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled at the foothills of West Kameng District in Arunachal Pradesh. The sanctuary is named after the Red Eagle Division of the Indian Army which was posted in the region during the 1950s. It is a part of the KPAC (Kameng protected area complex).

Flora
Poisonous Elephant nettle.

Fauna
Reptiles: the rare Darjeeling False-wolfsnake, Keelback snakes, Anderson's mountain lizard, the rare Abor Hills Agama, etc.
Mammals: Red Panda, Asian Elephant, endangered Capped Langur, leopards, tiger, Asiatic Black Bear, new subspecies of Pere David's macaque, etc.

Avian fauna
Bugun liocichla, rufous-bellied hawk-eagle, black stork, small pratincole, sunbirds, black-necked crane, cuckoos, vultures, harriers etc are spotted here.

Getting there
The closest railhead is at Bhalukpong and the nearest airport is at Tezpur. The tourists can hire taxis or buses from here to reach the sanctuary. Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is well linked by the Tawang–Tezpur route. Regular bus and taxi services are available between Itanagar/ Tawang and Tenga.

Tourist information
PWD Inspection Bunglows at Tenga and at Dedza are available for lodging. Accommodation is also available at the Forest Rest House at Ramalingam. Doimara in the south and Tenga in the north (always recommended) are the two entry points of the sanctuary.
The complete stretch from the Lama Camp on the northern slope up across the Eaglenest Pass and down to the southern slope to Khellong is the key bird watching region. The visitors will need a minimum of 10-14 days on foot and 6-10 days by jeep to view more or less the entire bird species of the region.
Forest entry permit can be obtained from the Divisional Forest Officer, Pakke Tiger Reserve, stationed at Seijusa, E. Kameng district. The entry permit for entering Arunachal Pradesh for both foreigners and Indian nationals are checked at Bhalukpong.
