GAMGUL SIABEHI WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Gamgul Siahbehi Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Bhandal valley in north-western Himachal
Pradesh. It adjoins with Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district at its northern border. The Siul nullah
flows through the western edge of the wildlife sanctuary. Gamgul Siahbehi Sanctuary is the only
wildlife sanctuary in Himachal Pradesh where Kashmir Stag or Hangul was reported to be seen. The
sanctuary was established in 1974.
Flora
Forest type: western mixed coniferous forest, alpine pastures and moist deodar forest.
Major trees: pine, poplar, deodar, etc.
Fauna
Important species: Kashmir Stag (reported to be seen)
Other species: Leopard, Musk Deer, Himalayan Weasel, yellow-Throated Marten, Goral, Rhesus
Macaque, Royle’s Pika, Indian Muntjac, Common Giant Flying Squirrel, Serow, Himalayan Tahr,
Himalayan Palm Civet, etc.
Avian Fauna
Yellow-Browed Ground Warbler, Variegated Laughing Thrush, Himalayan Monal, Cheer Koklas ,
White–browed Blue Flycatcher, Black and Yellow grosbeak Griffon Vulture, Himalayan Slaty-headed
Parakeet, Green–Backed Tit, etc.
Reaching There
The nearest airport and railway terminal are located at Pathankot, around 195 km away. Different
buses, taxis and vehicles are available from Chamba to Gamgul Siahbehi Wildlife Sanctuary. The
road route would be Chamba-Saluni-Bhandal (inside the sanctuary), approx. 80 km.
Tourist Information
Tourists can find quality accommodation at Forest Rest Houses at Bhainth and Sanghni, against prior
reservation with the forest authorities. PWD Rest houses at Bandal is another staying option for the
visitors. Trekking, wildlife spotting and photography are major activities of the wildlife freaks in the
sanctuary. Dadroh –Doda- Mandyal (10 km); Doda-Mandyal–Thath Dhar-Kalethar (10 km);
Mandyal–Sonu Tith-Galu (15 km); Maklunda-Galu di Mandi (10 km); and Maklunda-Bhith (10 km) are
some popular eco-trekking routes in Gamgul Siahbehi Sanctuary.
Soun Tith Gulu di Mandi, Thathi Dhar, Siyabehi and Gamgul are some eco-tourism spots that the
visitors to Gamgul Sanctuary can visit.
