GAUTALA AUTRAMGHAT SANCTUARY

Nestled along the Western Ghats’ Satmala and Ajantha hill ranges, Gautala Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over Jalgaon and Aurangabad districts of Maharashtra. It is also referred to as Gautala Abhayaranya Sanctuary.

Notification: Wildlife Sanctuary in 1986.

Flora
Forest type: arid deciduous forest
Trees: Chandan, Dhawada, Khair, Anjan, Arjun, etc.

Fauna
Wolf, chinkara, leopard, wanderoo, dhole, nilgai, rat snake, cobra, keel back viper, monitor lizard, etc.

Avian Fauna
Pochards, ibis, spoonbills, cranes, storks, patridge, jungle fowl, peafowl, quail and others.

Getting There
Chalisgaon is the closest railway station. Another nearby railhead is at Aurangabad. The nearest airport to Gautala Wildlife Sanctuary is in Aurangabad.
The sanctuary is well connected with Aurangabad and other cities of Maharashtra through regular network of roads. Kannad, Aurangabad and Chalisgaon State Highway passes through Gautala sanctuary.

Tourist Information
Tourists can stay in the forest guest houses located at Puranvadi and Bhambarwadi. The forest rest house at Patna Devi can be availed for accommodation against prior bookings.
Rock-climbing, trekking and nature study camps are popular activities here for the visitors. With prior permission from the forest officers, jungle survival camps can be arranged for students. A guide is mandatory for this camp. Lighting of camp fire and littering is strictly prohibited inside the forest. Kedarkund, Sita Khori, and Mahadeo Taka-Dhawal Teerth are some of the popular water spots
within Gautala Abhayaranya sanctuary. Gautala Talab, a reservoir tank, is a pleasant place to visit. Chitalkhora caves, Antur Fort and Buddhist cave temples (Pitalkhora) are popular places of interest in and around the sanctuary.
