GULMARG BIOSPHERE RESERVE
Gulmarg Biosphere Reserve is located in Jammu and Kashmir towards the southwest direction of
Srinagar. It is nestled about 57km away from Srinagar city. It is believed to be declared a wildlife
sanctuary in the year 1987.
Flora
Forest covers: conifers forest.
Trees: Himalayan cedar, West Himalayan Fir, Himalayan white pine,
Shrubs and herbs: Kashmir False Spirea, Indigo Bush, English spinach, etc.
Fauna
Main Attraction: Musk Deer
Other species: Leopard, Hangul, Black Bear, Serow, Brown Bear, Red Fox and so on.
Avian fauna
Griffon Vulture, Snow Cock, Monal, Kashmir Roller, Koklaas, Blue Rock Pigeon, European Hoopoe, Jungle
Crow, etc.
Getting there
The nearest bus terminal and airport are located at Srinagar. The closest railway station to Gulmarg
Biosphere Reserve is at Jammu (about 342km away).
Tourist Information
A number of private staying options are available for the tourists in Gulmarg. Tourists can opt to stay at
the camping site situated in the vicinity of the reserve. For any help or information the visitors can get in
touch with the Chief Wildlife Warden, stationed at Srinagar. Bird watching, trekking and nature trail are
important tourist activities here. While going for bird view trips, it is advisable to carry a powerful
binocular, camera (optional) and a bird guide book to identify different bird species.
