JESSORE SLOTH BEAR SANCTUARY
Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary is situated in Gujarat along the Jessore hills of Aravalli hills. The sanctuary
is located between the dry deciduous ecosystem and the desert ecosystem. It plays a major role in
thwarting the spread of the Thar Desert in the adjoining areas.

Flora
Vegetation type: arid to semi-arid and dry deciduous thorny scrub. Trees and plants: Silver date palm, pavonia arabica, iron bamboo, ogeissus sericea, velvet mesquite, Kulu, ceropegia odorata, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Sloth bear
Other species: leopard, sambar, porcupine, blue bull, monitor lizard, tortoise, Indian python, cobra and others.
Avian Fauna
Grey jungle fowl, Indian Black Ibis, White-bellied Minivet, White-winged Black Tit, Painted stork, Asian Open bill, Red-necked Falcon, Indian White-rumped Vulture, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport to the sanctuary is located about 190km at Ahmedabad. Iqbalgarh (around 8km) and Palanpur (45 km) are the nearest railheads. Jessore Sloth Bear Sanctuary is well connected by roads and is easily accessible from Ahmedabad, Idar, Mount Abu and Palanpur.
Tourist Information
Forest department cottages, dormitories and huts offer comfortable staying facilities to the visitors. Prior booking for these accommodation centres have to be made with the Dy. CFO of Banaskantha district or the Range Forest Officer. Food is also provided in these staying centres.
The sanctuary offers unique opportunity for trekking. Trekkers are advised not to carry heavy baggage with them. Always carry a stick during the trekking expeditions as it can be quite handy.
Areas beyond the Muni Ji ki Kutia region are the best places to spot rarest species of Indian python. Kedarnath temple, Balaram and Ambaji are other places of interest located in and around the sanctuary.
