KALAKKADU WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Established in 1988, Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary, in Tamil Nadu, is listed as one of the
important 18 biodiversity hotspots of the world. It forms a Tiger Reserve along with the
Mudanthurai Wild Life Sanctuary.
Flora
Tropical arid deciduous and tropical wet evergreen forests with patches of thorny forest.
Fauna
Tiger, Panthers, Brown Mongoose, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Python, King Cobra, Flying Lizard,
Elephant, Nilgiri, Sloth Bear, Mouse Deer and others.
Avian Fauna
Spur fowl, minivets, herons, egrets, quails, night jars, bee caters, owls, paradise fly catchers,
partridge, sparrows etc.
Getting there
Madurai Airport (about 200 km away) and Thiruvananthapuram's international airport (about
140 km away) are the closest airport to the sanctuary. The district of Tirunelveli has its own bus
terminal and it is well connected with regular bus services with Kalakad and Ambasamudaram.
Closest railway stations to Kalakkadu Wildlife Sanctuary are situated at Ambasamudram
(approximately 15 km) and Cheranmadevi (nearly 20 km).
Tourist Information
Forest Rest House located at Sengalther offers comfortable staying facilities for tourists.
Trekking and natural trails are popular activities here. There are almost 24 marked-out routes
for trekkers. Prior permission of Forest Department officials is required for trekking inside the
sanctuary.
Visitors can walk inside the park for a maximum period of four hours with a guide. Private
vehicles are allowed inside the park. Winters are quite chilly in this region. So carry adequate
warm clothes, if you plan to visit the sanctuary during the winter season.
