KAMBALAKONDA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the proximity of Visakhapatnam in the state of Andhra
Pradesh. It was established in the year 1970. Previously the area belonged to Maharajah of
Vizianagaram. The sanctuary is named after a nearby local hillock Kambalakonda.
Flora
Forest type: Dry evergreen forest mixed with meadows and scrub.
Trees and plants: Catunaregam spinosa, Tectona grandis, Abrus precatorius, Grewia tiliaefolia, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Indian leopard
Other species: Indian Jackal, Chital, Panther, Spotted Deer, Indian Pangolin, Indian Cobra, Chameleon,
Russell's Viper, etc.
Avian Fauna
Asian paradise-flycatcher, blue-tailed bee-eater, partridge, hoopoe, spot-billed duck, teepee, quails, etc.
Getting there
The nearest airport, railway station and bus terminal to Kambalakonda Wildlife Sanctuary are situated.
Tourist Information
Ethnic cottages facilitate overnight camping opportunities for the visitors. Other than this the
accommodation facilities within the sanctuary is very scanty. Better lodging options in form of hotels,
resorts and guest houses are available at Visakhapatnam, in short Vizag.
A lake situated within the reserve is the ideal place to spot different wild animals. Kambalakonda
sanctuary has different trekking routes for the adventure lovers. Trekking starts from 6 am in the
morning. Duration of each trek is about 3 hours. A guide has to accompany the trekking group. Prior
information has to be provided to the forest reception office one day in advance for making necessary
arrangement for a guide. Boating and nature trails are other major tourist recreational activities here.
