KANWAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Kanwar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated along the Parbati valley in Himachal Pradesh. The sanctuary is nearly 42km away from Kullu city. It is linked to the Great Himalayan National Park to its south-east.

Forest type: sub tropical broadleaf hill, alpine moist pasture, west Himalayan sub alpine, arid alpine pasture, mixed coniferous and temperate deciduous forests.

Trees: ban oak, cedar, kharsu oak, pindrow yew, blue pine, moru oak and fir.

Fauna
Important species: Himalayan Thar
Other species: Snow leopard, barking deer, brown bear, Himalayan wolf, Yellow-throated marten, Himalayan, weasel, ibex, etc.

Avian fauna
White cheeked tit, cheer pheasant and western tragopan and others.

Getting there
Joginder Nagar, about 95km away, is the nearest railhead to Kanwar Wildlife Sanctuary. The closest airport is at Bhuntar, approximately 10km away. Different buses and vehicles are available from these places to reach Kullu. The closest bus terminal is at Kullu.

Tourist Information
Camping facilities and a forest rest house for the visitors are available at Kasol. For any assistance or information the tourists can get in touch with the R.O. Wildlife, at Kasol.
The topography of the sanctuary is steep and rocky and provides excellent opportunity for adventure trekking. Trekking tract to Kahauli pass is popular of the lot. It is better not to visit Kanwar sanctuary during the winter time as the place receives heavy snowfall around this time of the year. Springs and temples, located on the outskirts of the forest reserve, are popular tourist attractions.
