KARAKORAM WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Nestled in the district of Leh in Jammu and Kashmir, Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the high
altitude wildlife sanctuaries in the country.
Flora
Vegetation covers: Riverine vegetation and medicinal plants
Trees:
Riverine vegetation - Rosia webbiana, Caragianae, Ephedra, etc
Medicinal plants: Bergenia stracheyi, Arnebia euchroma, Hyoscymus niger, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Tibetan antelope or Chiru
Other species of Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary: Snow leopard, bharal, Tibetan gazalle, wolf, Himalayan
ibex, red fox, common otter, Himalayan marmot, Himalayan mouse hare, wooly hare, double hump
camel and many more.
Avian fauna
Tufted Duck, Gadwall, Short-toed Eagle, Merganser, Charur, Bearded vultures, Golden Eagle, Gull,
lapwing, Blue Rock Pigeon, Hill Pigeon, small Skylark, Bifurcated Lark, Tufted Duck, etc
Karakoram Wildlife Sanctuary has been named so after the Karakoram Mountain Ranges. It is situated
in the easternmost ranges of the Karakoram Range.
