KARIKILI BIRD SANCTUARY

Karikili Bird Sanctuary is located in the state of Tamil Nadu. The sanctuary is around 86 km away from Chennai in Madurantakam Taluk.

Flora
Vegetation cover: Dry evergreen scrub and thorn forests.
Major tree species: Freshwater Mangrove, Babul, etc.
Avian Fauna
Important species: Waders And Ducks
Resident birds: Cormorants, Darter, spoonbill, Grey heron, Egrets, White lbis, Open-charged stork, Night herons, Grey pelican and Little grebes, etc.
Migratory birds: Shovellors, Garganey Blue-Greens, Common Blue-Greens, Sandpipers, Stilts, Pintailed Ducks and many more. The migratory birds start flocking in the sanctuary between September and October.

How to Reach Meenambakkam in Chennai is the closest airport. The nearest bus and railway terminals to Karikili Bird Sanctuary are situated in Chengalpattu. Regular State transport bus services are available from Chennai, Chengalpattu and Tambaram to Karikili sanctuary. Driving down from Chennai in a private car is the best way to reach the Sanctuary.

Tourist Information
PWD Rest House at Karunguzhi and Forest Rest House at Vedanthangal are available for accommodation with prior booking. Two rain-fed irrigation tanks that are situated inside the sanctuary are the ideal place to spot different bird species. Carry a proper a binocular or camera and a good bird guide book with you while going for bird sighting. Do not make any noise but remain calm while bird viewing. Wear khaki or olive green colour clothes so that you can easily blend with your surroundings.

Besides bird viewing, nature trail and picnic are other popular activities of the visitors in this bird sanctuary. Do not litter within the sanctuary but bring back all your waste, including any batteries, to dispose them in appropriate place outside the sanctuary. Avoid polluting the water bodies of the reserve. Do not pluck or damage the flora of the sanctuary.
