KAUNDINYA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Situated approximately 87 km away from the Horsley Hills, Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is believed
to be the only Elephant Reserve in Andhra Pradesh. It was established in December 1990 and is
situated in the Chittoor district. The sanctuary starts in the forest area that is located in the vicinity
of the Palamaner town, and the region is also referred to as Mogili Ghat. Rivers Kaundinya and Kaigal
flow through this sanctuary.
Flora
Forest type: thorn forests and southern tropical type of forest.
Trees and plants: Bamboo, Indian sandalwood, Accacias, Mahogany, Ficus, Albizzias, Shikakai, Red
Sanders, Amla, Reetha, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Indian Elephant (approximately 50 elephants)
Other species: Cheetal, Panther, Chowsingha, Tigers, Bison, Mouse Deer, Jackal, Sloth Bear, Wild
Boar, Starred Tortoise, Slender Loris, Sambar, Monitor Lizards, Porcupine, etc.
Avian Fauna
Grey Pelicans, Cockatiels, Painted Storks, Rosy Pelicans, Budgerigars and many more.
Getting there
By road Kaundinya Wildlife Sanctuary is about 120 km away from Bangalore and 50 km by road
from Chittoor. The closest airports are at Bangalore and at Tirupathi. Nearest railway station is at
Chittoor (about 41 km).
Tourist Information
Forest guest houses at Madanapalli, Horsley Hills and Palamaneru are ideal places for the visitors to
stay. Trekking, bird watching and nature trails are popular tourist activities in this forest.
