MAJHATHAL WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Majhathal Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled along the hilly terrains of the Himalaya in the state of
Himachal Pradesh. It was first notified as a wildlife sanctuary in 1962 and again re-notified in the
year 1974.
Flora
Forest type: Oak tress of ban, moru and kharsu species and chir pine.
Fauna
Important species: Gorals
Other species: Leopard, Barking Deer, Black Bear, Himalayan palm civet, Jungle cat and Langur.
Avian Fauna
Important species: Cheer pheasants
Other species: White beaked vulture, Kaleej pheasants, Black francolin, etc
How to Reach There
The closest aerodrome is located at a distance of about 23 km, at Jubbarhatti. Kalka railway station is
the nearest railway terminal to Majhathal Wildlife Sanctuary. By roadways the sanctuary can be
easily approached from Shimla, around 76 km away, through Shimla Bilaspur Highway. One can also
trek from Kashlog to reach Majhathal Sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Rest houses in the vicinity of the wildlife sanctuary are available for accommodation for the
incoming visitors with prior booking with the forest officials. Trekking, natural trail, camping, bird
watching and photography are popular tourist pastimes in the reserve. Camping facilities are
available close to the sanctuary. Jeep safari is not possible in the sanctuary as a result of rugged and
steep Himalayan terrains.
The undulating and heaving topography of Majhathal Sanctuary offer ideal locations for trekking. It
is always advisable to carry enough provisions of water and snacks while going for the trekking
excursions. The trekkers should always follow the designated path to avoid getting lost. Do not litter
within the sanctuary but bring back all your wastages so that it can be properly disposed off outside
the sanctuary.
