MANJIRA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary is actually a man-made reservoir that is located in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is nestled across the River Manjira, for a distance of about 36km. The sanctuary comprises nine small islands which are located between the Singur and Manjira barrages. It was initially established as a crocodile sanctuary in the year 1978. However, with the frequent visit of migratory birds, this sanctuary gradually became popular as a bird sanctuary.

Flora
Forest type: Dry Savannah vegetation cover.
Trees: Babool, Ipomea, Eichornia, Vallisnaria, Prosopis and Reeds.

Fauna
Flagship species: mugger crocodile (nearly 300 crocodiles).
Other species: Jackal, Indian hare, wild boar, monitor lizard, mongoose, cobra, fresh water turtles and others.

Avian Fauna
Herons, Teals, Black Cormorants, White Ibises, Pochards, Jacanas, Moon Hens, Open Billed Storks, Kingfishers, Painted Storks, Spoon Bills, etc.

Getting there Nearest airport to Manjira Wildlife Sanctuary is Hyderabad airport, about 60km away. The closest railhead is at Hyderabad. The sanctuary is well connected by road with Hyderabad, Karimnagar and Nizamabad. It can be easily approached from Sangareddy (5km) and Mecharia (29km).

Tourist Information
Tourists can find comfortable staying facilities at the Inspection Bungalows located at Singur Sangareddy and Sadasivapet. Better quality staying options are available at Hyderabad city. Boat safaris are the best way to explore this bird reserve. While going for bird spotting, always carry a binocular and a bird identification book with you. The Manjira sanctuary houses an Environmental Education Centre which contains a museum, an auditorium and a library. Everyday special movies on the wildlife are shown to the visitors on a 16mm projector.
