Established in the year 1979, Middle Button Island National Park is quite renowned for its spotted
deer. The total area coverage of the park is about 64 square kilometres.
About the park
The park is located in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, about 60 kilometres way from the Long
Island. The region enjoys favourable climate throughout the year. The summer temperature here is
about 30 degree Celsius and the winter temperature is about 15 degree Celsius. This national park
along with the North Button Island National Park and South Button Island National Park forms the
Button Island National Park.
Flora
Most of the park area is covered with deciduous forest. The important plant species of the area are
Artocarpus Gomeziana, Artocarpus Chaplasha, Aprosa Villosula, Caryota Mitis, Dinochloa
Andamanica, Salmalia Insignis, Calophyllum Soulattri, etc.
Fauna
The faunas of the region comprise of spotted deer, monitor, dolphins, blue whale, sea turtles, water
monitor, water lizard and different colourful coral species.
How to get there
The nearest airport is at Port Blair, which is the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and
is situated approximately 20 km away. The Port Blair is well connected with regular flights from
Chennai and Kolkata city. It can also be easily reached from Vishakhapatnam, Kolkata and Chennai
via Passenger ships. From Port Blair the visitors can hire private boats to reach Middle Button Island
National Park.
General information
No accommodation facilities are available inside the park. However, good quality lodges, hotels,
resorts and guest houses are available in Long Island and Port Blair. Camping facilities are available
for the tourists with prior permission from Divisional Forest Officer.
Towards the end of March, before the onset of monsoon, the shore areas of the Andaman and
Nicobar islands generally experience rough winds and wild waves. Hence, tourists should avoid
visiting the park during this period as hostile weather conditions may spoil their expedition.
