NAGZIRA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Notified as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1970, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Maharashtra, is often known as ‘the Green Oasis of Vidharba’. It is a vital corridor that links central and southern forested areas like the Kanha and Tadoba-Andhari Tiger Reserves.

Flora Vegetation cover: southern tropical dry deciduous forests, mixed forests, bamboo forest and grasslands. Major Species: Dhavda, Garari, Bija, Tinsa, Surya, Teak, Tendu and Bamboo.

Fauna
Tigers, Leopards, Panthers, Bisons, Four-Headed Antelope, Indian Mouse deer, etc.

Avian Fauna
Blackheaded Oriole, Brahminy Kite, Blackwinged Kite, Golden Oriole, Barbets, etc.

Tourist Information
Forest guest houses are available for accommodation within Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary with prior reservation. For reservation and other arrangements the visitors can contact the Dy. Conservator (Wildlife) stationed at Gondia or the Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) stationed at Nagpur.

Elephant safari, bird watching, nature trail and photography are popular tourist activities in the region. Watch cabins at Bandarchuwa, Ghatmara, Andharban, Pongezara and Kapala deva and watch towers at Nagzira hill, Nagzira lake, Nagzira well, Nagzira waste-weir and the Chital road are erected to enable the visitors to have a closer glimpse of the wildlife.

There is a tourist complex within the sanctuary which houses watch towers, slides and interpretation centre cum audio-visual hall. Nagzira gate is the main entrance to the sanctuary. Mangezari, Murpar, Kosamtondi, Balapur, Murdoli, Pongezara and the Chorkhamara gate are the other entrances to the Nagzira sanctuary.

Getting there
Closest bus terminal is about 22 km away at Sakoli. Gondia railway station about 45 km away is the nearest railway station. The nearest airport is about 122 km away at Nagpur. The Nagzira gate (main entrance) can be approached from Sakoli via Pitezari.
