Nameri National Park is situated in the Sonitpur district of Assam. It is nestled on the foothills of the
Eastern Himalaya at an elevation of about 100–350m above sea level.
History of the park
The park is spread across an area of 213 sq km and forms a core part of the Nameri National Tiger
Reserve. The area was set up as a sanctuary in 1985. It was conferred a national park status in the
year 1998. The area has been quite popular since the British era for its Golden Mahseer, a fish
species that is found quite abundantly in the rivers of the park.
Fauna
The fauna species of the park include Leopard, Tiger, Asian Elephant, Clouded Leopard, Leopard Cat,
Himalayan Black Bear, Indian Wild Dog, Indian Fox, Chinese Pangolin, etc. Turtles, Snakes and
Monitor Lizards are prevalent reptile species that are found here.
Avian Fauna
The park is home to several endangered species such as Large & Little Cormorant, Night Heron,
Redwattled Lapwing, Horned Owl, Green Imperial Pigeon, Red Jungle Fowl, and Indian Cuckoo etc.
Flora
The principal vegetation covers of Nameri National Park comprise of tropical evergreen forest, moist
deciduous forest and semi evergreen forests. Michelia champacas, Gmelina arborea, Urium poma,
Terminalia myriocarpa, Rudraksha, Mesua ferrca, etc. are some flora species of the park.
How to get there
Rangapara is the closest railway station (about 25 km away). The nearby airport is the Tezpur airport
(approximately 37 km away). From here the visitors can hire buses or taxis to reach the park. The
park is directly connected with Guwahati through the Bomdila Highway.
General information
The tourist lodge of the Tourism Dept of Assam at Bhalukpung offer standard accommodation
facilities. Many other lodges and hotels are also available at Tezpur. River Rafting, Fishing and
Wildlife Trekking are popular tourist activities here.
