NAVEGAON NATIONAL PARK – Maharashtra

With total area coverage of 135 sq km, Navegaon National Park is located in Bhandara district of Maharashtra.

About the park
The park was established in the year 1975. The park derives its name from the nearby Navegaon Dam. Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is a part of the park. The park comprises of a deer park, an aviary and three landscaped gardens.

Flora
The important flora species of the region are Jamun, Teak, Kawat, Haldu, Bhor, Bhel, Ain, etc. The prominent vegetation cover of the region is southern mixed dry deciduous forest.

Avian fauna
Around 60% of the avian-fauna species in the state of Maharashtra can be found at Navegaon. The birds that can be frequently seen here are kingfisher, paradise fly catcher, scarlet minivet, etc.

Fauna
The important fauna that can be sighted here are tiger, bison, panther, sloth bear, sambars, wild dog, nilgai, chital, languor, gaur and many others.

Getting there
The closest railhead is at Deulgaon about 2 km away and at Gondia about 65 km away. The closest airport is at Gondia (for private flights) and at Nagpur, about 65 km away. The nearby bus stand is located around 10 km at Navegaon. One can also avail buses from tehsil Head Quarter Arjuni and district Head Quarter Gondia to reach the park.

General information
The tourists can stay in the Youth Hostel or Rest Houses in Gondia with prior bookinig. Tree-top retreat, log huts, and cottages inside the park are other lodging options for visitors. The popular tourist attraction spots in and around the park are Tibetan Camp at Gothangaon, Nagzira Wildlife Sanctuary, Pratapgad and Itiadoh. Tourist activities like staying in a treetop house, riding a sailboat or powerboat on the lake and safari rides are offered by the park management. The park area is frequented by Maoist activists. Hence before venturing alone in the sanctuary always check with the forest security personnels.
