North Button Island National Park is situated in the Andaman district of Andaman and Nicobar
Island. It was established in the year 1979. Its total area is about 44 square miles.
Fauna
Cerulean Whale is the prime attraction of this area and can be seen mostly during the cold winter
months. The other fauna species are dolphins, dugong, water monitor lizard, jelly fish, blue whale,
giant groupers, unicorn fish, spiny foot, humpback snappers and so on. Coral Laminates, Boulder
Corals, Finger Corals and Stag horns can be seen on the reef flats.
Avian fauna
Several rare birds such as White belly sea eagle, Andaman teals, Wood pigeon, etc. can also be
sighted here.
Flora
Artocarpus chaplasha (Chaplash), canarium manii (Canarium nut), caryota mitis (Burmese fishtail
palm), hopea odorata (white thingan), salmalia insignis (Showy Silk Cotton Tree), dipterocarpus
grandiflorus (kanyin-byan), dinochloa andamanica (Wa-new), etc. are some endemic vegetation
species of the park.
How to get there
The best way to reach the park is via flight. The Port Blair airport (about 200 km) is the nearest
airport and is well connected with different important cities of India. Sea travel is another good
option. The closest sea port is at Port Blair. Around four voyages are conducted between Kolkata
and Chennai to Andaman and only one trip is operated between Vishakhapatnam to Andaman in a
month. After reaching the Port Blair port, the ships tarry there for about three days or so.
Tourist information
There are no accommodation facilities available within the park. However, some lodging facilities are
available at Barren Island and Long Island (about 60km away). More accommodation options are
available in Port Blair. Snorkeling and scuba diving are the two most important adventure activities
of the region. The island receives heavy rainfall during the months of June to October. Hence avoid
visiting the park during this time as heavy torrents can disrupt your expedition programs.
