Ntangki National Park is located in Peren district of Nagaland. It is spread over an
area of about 202 sq. km.
About the park
The idea of creation of the park was proposed in the year 1920 by J.H. Hutton, the
then Dy. Commissioner of Naga Hills. It was deemed a national park in 1993 by the
Government of Nagaland. In February, 2005, the park was also declared an elephant
reserve by the government. The park is also known as ‘Intanki’.
Flora
Grasslands and equatorial forests are quite prominent in the park. Deciduous and
semi tropical vegetation covers are found in certain patches of the part. Bamboo,
mahogany, palms, rattan and timber are some of the important tress of the reserve.
Fauna
Ntangki National Park is home to different animal species which include sloth bears,
Hoolock Gibbons, wild dogs, barking deer, tigers, leopards, flying squirrels, etc.
Mithun, a semi domesticated Gaur, which has been adopted as the official seal of the
Nagaland Government, is also found here.
Avian-fauna
Different colourful and rare species of birds such as, hornbills, pheasants, black stors,
etc. can be spotted here. The Great Indian Hornbills are regarded as very important
birds by the Nagaland people.
General information
Gorgeous valleys, cliffs and mountains of the forest offer excellent opportunity for
mountain hiking, trekking expeditions and camping. The Forest Rest House offer
lodging facilities to the visiting tourists. PWD Inspection Bunglow and Circuit House
near the park can also be availed for lodging purposes.
Major Tourist Attractions are Great Indian Hornbills, Mithun, leopards and tigers.
How to get there
Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland, is about 111 kms away. The closest airport and
railway station is in Dimapur city. One can easily hire a taxi or bus from these two
places to reach the park. NH 39 that passes close to the park links Nagaland with
other parts of the country. It also connects Nagaland directly with Guwahati in
Assam.
