ORANG NATIONAL PARK – Assam
Orang National Park is situated in the Darrang & Sonitpur districts of Assam along the northern bank
of the Brahmaputra River. It is spread over an area of about 78.80 sq. km.
About the park
The park is one of the oldest national parks in Assam. It was declared Sanctuary in the year 1985. In the year 1999 it was established as a National Park. Later, down the line, the park was renamed Rajiv Gandhi Orang National Park. The park is also popularly referred to as Mini Kaziranga.
Flora
Jujube Fruit (Zizypphus jujube), Red Silk Cotton Tree (Bombax ceiba), Hairy Sterculia (Sterculia villosa), blady grass (Imperata cylindrical), giant reed (Arundo donax), etc. are some of its endemic vegetations.
Fauna
Mini Kaziranga is quite popular for its Great Indian one-horned rhinoceros and Royal Bengal Tiger populations. The other animals of the park are Hog Deer, Elephants, Civet Cat, Wild Pig, Gangetic Dolphin, Porcupine, etc. King Cobra, Black Krait, Monitor Lizard, Indian Rock Python, Cobra, tortoise, turtle, etc. constitutes the reptile species of the park.
Avian Fauna
The sanctuary is home to different species of birds which include Brahminy Duck, Bengal Florican, Spot Billed Pelican, Greater and Lesser Adjutant Stork, Rudy Shelduck, Pallas's Fishing Eagle, Mallard and so on.
How to reach there
The nearest railhead and airport is located in Sonitpur district (about 41 km away). The nearby bus terminal is at Tezpur (about 32 km from park). The park can also be reached from Dhansirimukh and Orang town via NH 52.
Tourist information
The park has one dormitory and two rest houses providing accommodation facilities to the visitors. More lodging options are available at Tezpur. The tourists can avail the jeep safaris that are organized by the park management. For sight-seeing, tourists can visit the adjoining villages.
