OVERA ARU WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Overa Aru Wildlife Sanctuary is situated to the Southeast of Srinagar in the Kashmir Region of Jammu
and Kashmir. The sanctuary derives its name from the two hutment areas of Overa-Aru. It was gazetted
wildlife sanctuary in the year 1987.
Flora
Forest type: Coniferous Forests, Riverian Vegetation, Alpine Scrubs and Pastures
Major tree and scrub species: Himalayan cedar, West-Himalayan silver fir, Bhutan pine, Indian horse
chestnut, Indigo bush, Kashmir false spirea, etc.
Fauna
Leopard, musk deer, Himalayan mouse hare, hangul, brown bear, serow, grey langur, rhesus macaque,
etc.
Avian Fauna
Griffon vulture, monal, koklas, Kashmir roller, blue rock pigeon, European hoopoe, snow cock, jungle
crow, etc
Getting There
Nearest major accessible town to Overa Aru Wildlife Sanctuary is Pahalgam. Closest airport is in
Srinagar, about 76 km away. Nearest railway terminal is located in Jammu. Nearest road-links to the
sanctuary are at Srinagar, Pahalgam and Anantnag.
Tourist Information
Tourists can find quality staying facilities in two bedroom huts located within the sanctuary. More
accommodation options are available in Srinagar and Jammu. The topography of the sanctuary is hilly
undulating terrain. Hence, wear comfortable clothes and proper shoes that have strong soles. Avoid
wearing any heavy jewellery during visit. Also do not wear flashy coloured clothes and strong perfumes.
Always remain calm while wildlife viewing and do not shout. Littering, hunting, carrying loud speakers
and transistors and entry after sunset inside the forest are strictly prohibited.
The visitors can visit the tribal villages in Overa and Aru located in buffer areas of sanctuary and
experience their lifestyle and culture more closely. For any information the tourists can contact the
Range Officer, Overa Pahalgam or the Wildlife Warden, South Kashmir, Bijbehara Anantnag.
