PARAMBIKULAM TIGER RESERVE - Kerala

Parambikulam Tiger Reserve is situated at Chittoor taluk of Kerala’s Palakkad district. It is nestled in the Sungam hill range between the Nelliampathy Hills and Anaimalai Hills at an elevation of between 300 and 1440m above sea level.

About the reserve
The reserve is spread over an area of about 277.40 sq km. The area is a portion of Anamala Hills sub- cluster in the Western Ghats, which may be very soon recognized as one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Notifications: Established as Wildlife Sanctuary in 1973 and Tiger Reserve in 2009.

Flora
Important trees are rosewood, teak, sandalwood, Vayals and neem.

Fauna and Avian Fauna
As per the last tiger census, there are about 20 tigers in Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. Real-estate mafia, mining mafia and other smuggling activities have led to the decrease in tiger population in recent years. However, efforts are being made by the government to revive the tiger population through several tiger conservation programmes.

The other fauna and bird species include Lion-tailed Macaques, Nilgiri Tahr, Indian leopards, Travancore wolf snake, Cochin cane turtle, Mugger Crocodile, Broad-billed roller, Little Cormorant, Grey-headed Fish-eagle, Great Indian hornbill and many more.

Getting there
The nearest railway station and bus terminal are located at Pollachi, about 65 km away. Ambrampalayam-Parambikulam is the only route that leads to the reserve. The closest airport is at Coimbatore , about 40 km away.

Tourist tips
Quality accommodation can be availed at the tree-house and State Forest Department rest houses at Thoonakkadavu and at the inspection bungalow at Thellikkal. Other lodging options are available at Elathode.
Trekking, boating in a house boat, bird watching and nature trails are popular tourist activities. Advance permission for trekking has to be obtained from the forest officials. Cannimare Teak Tree is an important tourist attraction of the reserve. This tree is over 350 years old and is believed to be the largest Teak Tree in the whole of Asia.
