POINT CALIMERE WILDLIFE AND BIRD SANCTUARY
Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary is located in Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu. The
sanctuary is located along the Palk Strait where it unites with the Bay of Bengal at Point Calimere,
which is situated towards the southeastern tip of Nagapattinam District. The sanctuary was notified
in the year 1967.
Flora
Vegetation cover: Tropical dry evergreen forests, mangroves and grasslands.
Major tree species: pala, mesquite, ironwood, etc.
Fauna
Flagship species: Black Buck Antelope
Other species: Jackal, spotted deer, short-nosed Fruit Bat, Indian Grey Mongoose, feral pony, small
Indian civet, monitor lizard, star tortoise and bottlenose dolphin.
Avian Fauna
White-browed bulbul, Brahminy kite, crow pheasant, blue-tailed bee-eater, collared doves, Rose-
ringed parakeet, common iora, etc.
Getting there
The closest airport to Point Calimere Wildlife and Bird Sanctuary is at Tiruchirapalli, approx. 150 km
away. Nearest railway station is at Nagapattinam, about 60 km. Taxi and bus services are available
from Vedaranyam (about 8 km away).
Tourist Information
Accommodation for the incoming visitors is available at the Forest Department Rest House in
Kodaikarai, with prior reservation with the Wildlife Warden. More staying options are available at
Vedaranyam.
The sanctuary’s entrance point is situated 55 km south of Nagapattinam and 5 km south of
Vedaranyam. A 6 km long paved path leads to the villages of Kodaikarai and Kodiyakadu from the
entrance point. Guides for animal and bird watching excursions have to be booked in advance with
the Wildlife Warden.
Two wheelers are not allowed inside the sanctuary and no vehicles are allowed inside the core area
of the reserve. The sanctuary is strictly a ‘no plastic zone’. Watch towers have been erected in
different places of the sanctuary to enable the visitors to have a bird’s eye view of the entire forest
area.
