PULICAT LAKE BIRD SANCTUARY

Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary is situated along the Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu coast on Coromandal Coast in South India. It is basically a saline backwater lake that is drained by river Arni. The total area of the Pulicat Lake Sanctuary is around 481 sq km. However, the area of the Bird sanctuary in the Tamil Nadu side is about 60 sq km. The Tamil Nadu portion of the sanctuary was established in October 1980 and the Andhra Pradesh portion of the sanctuary was established in September 1976.

Flora
Vegetation cover: Littoral scrub, patches of dry evergreen forest and aquatic vegetations Aquatic vegetation species: red algae, green algae, cyanophyceae, phytoplankton, etc. Tree species: Neem, Kurpa, Asian palmyra palm, Reetha, Indian tulip tree, etc.

Fauna
Mammal species: Jungle Cat, Small Indian Mongoose, Golden Jackal, Leopard, etc.
Fish species: Mullets, Sardines, Blowfish, Striped dwarf catfish, etc.
Other species: Oysters, mussels, clams, crabs, sponges, prawns, anemone, fish worms, spiders, snails, plankton, etc.

Avian Fauna
Flamingo, large-billed grey pelican, peregrine falcons, terns, white-bellied sea eagle, sea gulls, curlews, stilts, sand pipers, egrets, redshank, lapwings, waterside birds, kites, herons, etc.

How to Get There
Closest airport to Pulicat Lake Bird Sanctuary is at Meenambakkam in Chennai. Closest railway station is at Ponneri, approximately 19 km away. The nearest major bus terminal is located at Chennai, around 90 km away.

Tourist Information
Forest Rest House with 2 suites provides comfortable staying facilities to the tourists. One can also opt to stay at Inspection Bungalows at Tada and Sullurpet with prior bookings. Bird safari, trekking and aquatic sports are major pastime of the visitors in the sanctuary. The visitors are expected to diligently follow the rules and regulations of Pulicat Lake sanctuary. Avoid feeding or touching the wild animals and mimicking the birds’ call. Do not pollute the waters of the Pulicat Lake in any manner.
