RAJGIR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Rajgir Wildlife Sanctuary is located in the state of Bihar, about 102km away from Patna. The
sanctuary is surrounded by hills that have ancient connection with the Buddhist and Jain history.

Main attraction: Elephants
Other species: Tigers, Barking Deer, Leopards, Nilgai, Hyenas, Pigmy dogs, Wild Dogs, Panther, Wild
bear, Python, Indian Cobra, Hilly Lizard, Monitor Lizard, etc.
Previously the sanctuary was the main habitat of the tigers. However, due to the increasing human
encroachment in the nearby areas of the sanctuary, most of the tigers have migrated to the
Sundarbans of West Bengal. The present tiger population of the area is approximately 12 tigers only.
Avian Fauna
Partridge, grey and black quails, jungle fowl, peafowl, hornbill, dove, myna, parrot, etc.
Getting there
Patna airport is the closest airport to the sanctuary. The closest railhead is at Rajgir. Rajgir Wildlife
Sanctuary is well connected with different towns and cities of Bihar by regular bus services.
Tourist Information
Different rest houses and lodges of the Forest & Public Works Department and the State
Government's Tourism are provided within the sanctuary for the incoming tourists. Rajgir sanctuary
is quite popular among tourists for its adventurous treks and scenic beauty. The most popular of all
is the Fhwajadhari Hillock.
Koderma Wildlife Sanctuary, Gautam Buddha Sanctuary, Netrahat Hills, etc are other famous places
of interest in the vicinity of the sanctuary. There are numerous hot water springs in the forest area.
Sulphur content in these hot springs is quite high.
