Rani Jhansi Marine National Park is located in the Ritchie Archipelago, the prime island group of the
Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is spread over three Islands - Henry Lawrence Island, Outram Island
and John Lawrence Island. The park was established in the year 1996 and its total area coverage is
approximately 256 sq km.
Flora
Mangroves and terrestrial moist forests cover substantial part of the park.
Wildlife
The park is quite popular for its fruit-eating bats that contribute immensely in sustaining the
ecological balance of the area. The other wildlife species include crocodiles, dugong, endangered
marine lifes, coral reefs, rare birds and so on.
Getting there
The best way to reach Rani Jhansi Marine National Park is by flight. The nearest airport and the sea
port are at Port Blair (about 25km away). Port Blair is also well connected with Chennai, Kolkata and
Vishakhapatnam with regular ship services.
Travel tips
Accommodation can be availed in the Forest Department Guest House with prior booking. Few other
lodging options are available in the nearby town of Baratang (40 km), Rangat (70 Km), Mayabunder
(140 Km), Diglipur (220 Km), etc.
Tourists are required to obtain entry permit before entering the park. The visitors are not allowed to
carry pets, transistors, Video/ Audio cassette players and combustible items. Feeding and chasing
wild animals, breaking plants and flowers, fast driving, shouting and blowing vehicle horns and
littering within the park area are strictly prohibited.
It is recommended to follow guide’s instructions religiously; always maintain silence and keep safe
distance from the wildlife. Otherwise one may miss the chance of viewing the birds and animals.
Avoid wearing bright colours like white and red. Opt for dresses with dull hues.
Visit to the Outram Island, John Lawrence Island and Henry Lawrence Island will give one a glance
into the ancient history of British Raj in India.
