Ranthambore National Park is located in Rajasthan’s Sawai Madhopur District, almost
130km away from Jaipur. It is spread over a sprawling area of about 392 sq km.
About the park
The park is named after the famous Ranthambhore fortress. The park was first established as
the Sawai Madhopur Game Sanctuary in 1955 by the Indian Government. It was declared a tiger
reserve under the campaign of 'Project Tiger' in 1973. In 1980 it was notified as a national park.
Flora
The prime tree species of the reserve are Am, Babul, Dhok, Kadam, Khairl Khajur, Neem, Jamun,
Babul, etc. Some of the tallest banyan trees are found in this park.
Fauna
The reserve is quite popular for its diurnal tigers. The other endemic fauna species are Cobras,
Flap Shelled Turtles, Leopards, Common Frog, Indian Wild Boar, Marsh crocodile, Hanuman or
Common langurs, Common India Toad, Indian Flying Foxes, Common Yellow Bats, etc.
Avian fauna
Graylag Goose, Indian Gray Hornbills, Woodpeckers, Sandpipers, Egrets, Herons, Cuckoo-
Shrikes, Ibis, Asian Palm Swift, Wood Shrikes, etc. are some of the bird species of the reserve.
How to reach there
The closest airport is at Jaipur and Kota. The nearest bus terminal and railway station are
located at Sawai Madhopur, about 11 km away from the park. Plenty of buses and cars ply
between Sawai Madhopur and Ranthambore National Park daily. Sawai Madhopur lies on the
Delhi-Bombay railway-track and is well connected with Delhi, Jaipur, Bombay and Agra.
Tourist Information
Accommodation is available in hotels, resorts and guest houses located around the park. The
visitors are not allowed to take private vehicles inside the park. They can hire forest jeeps for
safaris. Each jeep safari is approximately for three and a half hours. However, selection of zone
solely lies with park authorities. Tourists are advised to follow assigned routes to tour the park.
