SADDLE PEAK NATIONAL PARK - Andaman and Nicobar Islands

Saddle Peak National Park is located in the Andaman district of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It was established in the year 1979 and is located approximately 5 kilometers away from the Diglipur Town. The park is spread over an area of about 33 sq km. It is nestled at an altitude of about 740 m above sea level.

Flora
Tropical and moist-tropical forest and evergreen forest are chief vegetation covers of the region. The Cleistanthus robustus and Scolopia pusilla are the important flora species of the park that are not found elsewhere in the country.

Fauna
Dolphins, Andaman wild pig, water monitor, whales, etc. are important fauna species that inhabit in this park.

Avian fauna
Andaman imperial pigeon and Andaman hill myna are most popular and endemic birds of the park.

How to reach there
The nearest sea port and airport are located at Port Blair. Port Blair is well connected with Chennai, Vishakhapatnam and Kolkata with regular flights and ship services. From Port Blair the visitors can reach Saddle Peak National Park by road-ways via Madhupur. The tourists can also avail a series of ferry services from Port Blair to reach the park. Another alternative way of reaching the park from Port Blair is via Diglipur to Lamiya Bay, which is situated in the vicinity of the park.

Tourist Information
The visitors can lodge in either of the two Yatri Niwas (rest houses) located on the Hillock. Entry permit is required for entering the park. Entry permits can be obtained from the forest department office which is opposite the park entry at the trailhead. The best place to sight the whales and the dolphins are at the Lamiya Bay. It is better to avoid visiting the park in the monsoon season (June to October) as heavy storms and rain can ruin forest excursions. Remain silent during the animal sighting or else the animals run away.
