SEMARSOT WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Semarsot Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled along the Ambikapur-Daltongunj Road, close to the deserted
Semarsot village, in the state of Chhattisgarh. It is named after the Semarsot reserve block. It was
conferred a wildlife sanctuary status on 20 th February, 1978, under the M.P. Wildlife Protection
Rules, 1974 and the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
Flora
Deciduous, sal and riverine forests.
Fauna
Tiger, yapping deer, panther, chital, 4-horned impala, leopard, sambar deer, striped hyena, jackals,
cobra, python, etc.
According to the 1997 census reports there are nearly 19 leopards and 1 tiger in the Semarsot
sanctuary.
Avian Fauna
Green pigeon, red and tan mixed coloured jungle fowl and many other colourful resident and
migratory birds.
Accessibility
Semarsot Wildlife Sanctuary is located almost right in the middle of the country. However, the
communication system of this sanctuary is yet to be properly developed. Varanasi airport in Uttar
Pradesh is the closest aerodrome to the sanctuary. Jainagar railway station is the nearest railhead.
By road the tourists can approach this sanctuary from Ambikapur via Ambikapur-Daltongunj Road.
Tourist Information
Staying options within the forest reserve is practically scanty. One can find quality accommodation
options in the nearby Ambikapur city. This sanctuary comprises hilly and uneven topography. Hence,
it is always recommended to wear comfortable clothes while visiting this sanctuary.
Trekking and jungle safaris are prominent tourist activities here. Littering, making loud noise and
teasing the wildlife are strictly prohibited.
Shiv Temple, Kailash Caves, Pawai Waterfall, Tatapani hot water spring, Kedai Waterfall, etc are
some of the interesting tourist spots located around the sanctuary.
