SHIKARI DEVI SANCTUARY
Shikari Devi Sanctuary is situated in the Shikari Devi village at Mandi District of Himachal Pradesh. It
was constituted as a wildlife sanctuary in the year 1962.
Flora
Forest type: kharsu oak, ban oak, lower temperate forest, Himalayan chir pine forest and temperate
secondary scrub forest and sub Alpine pastures.
Fauna
Snow leopard, barking deer, cat leopard, musk deer, leopard, Himalayan palm civet, Kashmiri flying
squirrel, Himalayan black bear, Indian porcupine, marten, common langur, common squirrel, etc.
Getting there
Joginder Nagar Railway Station is the closest railway station to Shikari Devi Sanctuary. The nearest
airport is the Kullu Manali Airport at Bhuntar. From Mandi the route is: Mandi – Chail Chowk –
Janjehli – Shikari Devi. One can hire HRTC buses, private vehicles or taxis to reach the sanctuary.
From Shimla the route is: Shimla - Tattapani – Karsog State Highway 13 – sanctuary.
Tourist Information
Provisions for staying are available at the forest rest houses in and around the sanctuary. One can
opt to lodge at the Forest Guest house located near the Shikari Devi Temple or DW Guest house at
Janjehli. For other information or arrangement one can contact the DFO wildlife, stationed at Kullu.
The sanctuary remains covered with snow for almost six months. Therefore, the tourists should
make a trip to this protected area only during the summer season. The place offers excellent
opportunity for trekking. Shikari Devi Sanctuary, Shikari Devi Peak, Kamru Nag Temple, Barot,
Karsog, and Rohanda are some important tourist destinations in the vicinity of the sanctuary.
