South Button Island National Park is located in the Andaman District of the Andaman and Nicobar
Islands.
About the park
The park is situated towards the south-west direction of Havelock Island and is approximately two
hours drive by motor boat from the Island. The total area coverage of the park is about 5 sq km. It was
established in the year 1977.
Flora
The prominent flora of the region include chaplash, Nicobar canoe tree, keruing, garjan, Andaman
thingan, salmalia insignis, red dhup, rambai, dinochloa andamanica, showy silk cotton tree, etc.
Fauna
The prominent fauna species that inhabits in this region are Dugong, Water Lizards, Morays, Shrimp,
Lionfish, Nudibranchs, and Octopus. Devil Rays, Blue Whale, Manta Rays, Big-Eye Trevally, Surgeonfish,
Napoleon Wrasse, Barracuda, etc. can be occasionally sighted in the western and eastern side of the
islet. The thin water tropical coral reefs of the island are the prime attraction for the tourists.
There are no beaches on this island. To avert the risk of destroying the corals the visitors are prohibited
from landing ashore.
It rains a lot during the monsoon season. So it is advisable to avoid visiting the park during the rainy
season.
Getting there
The nearest aerodrome and the nearest sea port are located in Port Blair. Port Blair is well connected by
regular flights with other parts of the country. There are regular ship services between Port Blair and
Kolkata, Vishakhapatnam and Chennai.
Tourist information
There are no accommodation facilities on the South Button Island National Park. The visitors can find
quality lodging in the Long Island and in Port Blair. Snorkeling and Scuba diving are the popular tourist
activities in the park.
