Situated in the Gurgaon district of Haryana, Sultanpur National Park is spread over an area of
1.43 sq km. It is located approximately 48 km from Delhi.
About the park
With the efforts of Mr. Peter Jackson, an ornithologist and former Honorary Secretary of Delhi
Bird Watching Society and Dr. Salim Ali, an Indian ornithologist, the park was declared a Bird
Sanctuary in 1972. Hence, the sanctuary is also called as Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary. In 1989
it was deemed a National Park.
Avian fauna
Resident birds of the sanctuary include black necked stork, Indian roller, red collared dove,
cattle egret, laughing dove, rose ringed parakeet, etc.
The migrant bird species include wood sandpiper, spot billed pelican, great flamingo, black
tailed godwit, spotted redshank, black crowned night heron, comb duck and so on.
Fauna
The important fauna of the sanctuary include Leopard, Nilgai, Four Horned Antelope, Striped
Hyena, Rattle Badger, etc.
Flora
The prominent tree species of the region include ber, umbrella thorn, black babool, neem,
banyan tree, berberis, dhok, etc.
Getting there
The nearest airport and the nearest railhead are located in Delhi. From Delhi one can hire buses
or cabs to reach Sultanpur National Park. From Gurgaon (approximately 16 km away), one can
drive through NH-8 or board a Delhi Metro train to reach the park.
Tourist information
A guest house that is run by the Haryana Tourism Department can be availed for
accommodation with prior booking.
The most ideal time to visit the park is at 6 am in the morning as most birds leave their nest
before sunrise and come back only after sunset. To enhance the experience of bird sighting
always carry binoculars. Binoculars are also given on hire inside the park.
