TANSA WILDLIFE SANCTUARY
Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in the Shahapur, Wada and Mokhada Talukas in the district of
Thane in Maharashtra. The sanctuary consists of the catchment region of Tansa Lake and the
adjoining forests of Khardi, Shahapur, Vaitarna and East Wada Ranges in Shahapur tehsil of the
district of Thana.
Flora
Forest types: southern tropical moist deciduous forests
Trees: Khair, Kalamb, Teak, Bibla, Hed, Bamboo, Ain, etc.
Fauna
Barking deer, Panther, Mouse deer, Wild boar, Hyena and others.
Avian Fauna
Lapwings, Bayas, Orioles, Crested serpent eagles, Woodpeckers, Cacket tailed drongoes, Paradise
flycatcher, Egrets, Bulbuls, Shrikes, Hornbill, etc.
Getting there
The nearest railway station to Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary is located approximately 13Km away at
Atgaon on the Central Railway. The sanctuary is around 90km away from Mumbai. By road it can be
accessed from Shahapur town on Mumbai-Agra NH-3. The closest airport is in Mumbai.
Tourist Information
One can avail accommodation at forest rest house situated at Suryamal in the Shahapur district
against prior booking with the Deputy Conservator of Forests, stationed at Thane. Few other staying
options are available in the proximity of Tansa sanctuary.
The Tansa Lake, an artificial lake, situated within the sanctuary is an ideal place to spot different
wildlife. This lake is an important source of water for the animals and birds of the forest reserve.
The Mahadeo Temple in Tisla, the Mahuli fort, the Plateau of Suryamal, etc. are some of the famous
places of interest in and around the sanctuary.
