VAN VIHAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary is nestled along the Vindhyan plateau in Rajasthan, about 18 km from Dholpur. It was established as wildlife sanctuary in the 1955. The sanctuary is divided into two parts – the core Van Vihar sanctuary and Ramsagar sanctuary.

Flora
Mostly Dhok and Khair trees.

Fauna
Leopard, Sambhar, Sloth Bear, Chital, Hyena, Wild Boar and Blue Bull.
Tiger was seen in the Van Vihar Sanctuary till 1960s.

Avian Fauna
Red crested pochard, pintail, wigeon, garganey teal, common teal, ringed plovers, tufted duck, white-breasted water hens, herons, etc.

How To Get There
The nearest airport to Van Vihar Wildlife Sanctuary is at Jaipur. The closest railway station is at Dholpur. Dholpur is situated on NH 3 and is so well linked with Gwalior (around 60 km away) and Agra (about 55 km away). From Dholpur once can get different transportation options to reach the sanctuary.

Tourist Information
An old forest rest house inside the sanctuary is available for accommodation with prior booking with the Dy. Conservator of Forests. This rest house was earlier built by the rulers of Dholpur and is at present under the management of the forest department. Safari ride, bird watching, nature photography and nature trail are major past times of the visitors to this sanctuary. For safari rides, the tourists can hire a petrol gypsy or a jeep from the forest gate itself.

While viewing the wild animals do not alight from your respective vehicles but maintain safe distance from the animals. Avoid feeding, teasing or calling on the wild animals. Carry a good camera or binocular to make your visit to the sanctuary a memorable one. Ramsagar wildlife sanctuary, ‘Talab Shahi’ lake and Muchchhkkund are some famous tourist spots near Van Vihar Sanctuary.
